How does a pressure relief valve work?

A pressure relief valve protects piping systems components from damage due to over-pressurization. The valve works by sensing system pressure. When the system pressure exceeds the set pressure, the force of the excess pressure moves the valve piston off its seat just enough to release only the extra pressure.
