Furniture-Grade Pipe and Fittings FAQs

Q. Can regular PVC pipe be used with the Furniture-Grade Fittings?

A. The 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1-1/4", and 1-1/2" furniture-grade pipe have the same OD as the SCH40 and SCH80 pipe. SCH40 and SCH80 pipe can be used instead of the furniture-grade pipe with external furniture-grade fittings.

The 1-1/4" internal furniture-grade fittings (only available in select colors) will fit inside SCH40 pipe and select colors of the 1-1/4" furniture-grade pipe (see further information below). First, check the ID of the pipe used to ensure the internal fittings will fit snugly.

The 3/4" CTS size Furniture-Grade Pipe does not fit SCH40 or SCH80 pipe.

Q. What sizes and colors are available in furniture-grade pipe?

A. We offer Furniture-Grade Pipe in the following sizes:

Pipe Size ID OD Wall Note
1/2" 0.622" 0.84" 0.109" Clear Only
3/4" 0.824" 1.05" 0.113" Clear Only
3/4" CTS 0.735" 0.875" 0.070" White Only
1" 1.049" 1.315" 0.133" Clear & White Only
1-1/4" 1.38" 1.66" 0.140" Clear & Colored Only
1-1/4" 1.394" 1.66" 0.113" White Only
1-1/4" 1.394" 1.66" 0.100" 28648 & 28240 Black Only
1-1/2" 1.61" 1.9" 0.145" Clear Only
1-1/2" 1.69" 1.9" 0.105" White Only

The colors available are white, black (2 versions), clear, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, bronze, purple, and pink.

Q. Are fittings and pipe colors interchangeable?

A. The 1-1/4" external fittings are interchangeable between colors, as the pipe OD is the same for all colors in that size.

The 1-1/4" internal fittings will only fit the 1-1/4" clear or colored pipe, as the ID and wall thickness are the same. The 1-1/4" black and white pipe will NOT work with the 1-1/4" internal fittings, as the ID and wall thickness will not accommodate the internal fitting size.

Q. What is the difference between internal and external furniture-grade fittings?

A. The internal fittings, including dome caps, ball caps, and internal couplings, are designed to fit the inside wall of the pipe. External fittings are designed to fit over the outside wall of the PVC pipe and are slip-by-slip. External fittings can accommodate thinner wall pipe as the outer diameter does not change; only wall thickness does (all sizing is approximate).

Q. What is the difference between tees, slip tees, and sling slip tees?

A. A standard tee fits onto the end of a pipe with a stop inside to prevent the pipe from sliding all the way through.

A slip tee fits snuggly on a pipe but does not have a stop on one end, allowing a pipe to slide all the way through.

A sling slip tee works the same way as a slip tee but fits loosely on a pipe, allowing the tee to slide around freely.

Q. Can PVC pipe cement be used on the Furniture-Grade Pipe and Fittings?

A. Yes, it can. PVC cement will allow you to make secure permanent connections. Shop Pipe Cements and Primers

Q. Do you sell cushions for PVC furniture?

A. No, we do not.

Q. The fittings seem small, and I am having trouble putting them on. What can be done?

A. Furniture-grade fittings are designed to fit snugly so that they can be used for easily disassembled items without falling apart. If you have trouble getting them on, a Rubber Mallet can help.
