Here is an overview of bag thicknesses and their uses:
1.5 mil = ideal for packaging small screws, parts, clothing and a wide variety of other items that need protection from dust and dirt
2 mil = standard duty weight
3 mil = offers strength and toughness at a significant cost savings; ideal for parts, tools and variety of other applications
4 mil = heavy duty bag for heavier products
6 mil = Super heavy weight bags are the right choice for sharp-edged products, such as metal dies, hardware and plumbing supplies, etc.
The gauge of the material is measured in thousands of an inch, called 'mils'. A bag that is 1.5 mil is .0015 thousands of an inch thick.
