The tomato base causes the stains. The culprit is a chemical that gives tomatoes their beautiful red color: lycopene. Lycopene is a huge hydrocarbon with many double bonds, and, for some reason, it discolors plastic products. Soak the stained product in bleach to remove this stain, which will kill the lycopene.
